Marronnage: The Art Of Freeing Yourself ~ A Journey From Bondage To Freedom!
Freedom is one of the greatest gifts God offers His children, yet many believers struggle to fully walk in it. Some are free physically but bound emotionally. Others are free emotionally but trapped by fear, insecurity, shame, unforgiveness, or the weight of their past. Many have encountered God’s delivering power, yet continue carrying remnants of old mindsets, old wounds, and old identities. This devotional series was birthed from the understanding that freedom is not simply an event, it is a process, a journey, and a daily decision.
The word “marronnage” historically described enslaved people who escaped captivity in pursuit of freedom. It was more than an act of running away. It was a courageous decision to leave behind systems of oppression and embrace the possibility of a new life. Those who engaged in marronnage were not simply seeking a different location; they were pursuing a different future. Spiritually, marronnage becomes a powerful picture of what happens when God calls you out of every place of bondage and into the freedom He has prepared for you.
Many people desire freedom without understanding the journey that freedom requires. They want the promise but not the process. They want the breakthrough but not the transformation. Yet throughout Scripture, God reveals that freedom involves more than leaving something behind. Freedom involves becoming someone new. The children of Israel left Egypt in a single night, but learning how to live as free people required an entirely different journey. Their physical location changed quickly, but their thinking required transformation.
This series explores the reality that freedom begins by recognizing the chains that have quietly influenced your life. Sometimes those chains are obvious, while other times they are hidden beneath years of survival, disappointment, fear, rejection, or pain. What remains hidden often remains unhealed. God lovingly reveals what He intends to restore, not to shame you, but to set you free.
You will also discover that freedom often requires leaving what has become familiar. Many people remain connected to unhealthy patterns not because they are beneficial, but because they are comfortable. Familiarity can become a prison disguised as security. Yet God continually calls His people beyond comfort zones and into places of greater trust, greater healing, and greater purpose.
As the journey continues, you will learn that freedom must be supported by truth. Deliverance may happen in a moment, but transformation happens through the renewing of your mind. God desires to replace every lie with truth, every fear with faith, every insecurity with identity, and every limitation with His promises. True freedom grows stronger as God’s Word becomes the foundation of your thinking.
You will also explore the importance of building new foundations. Lasting freedom is not sustained by emotion alone. It requires stability. It requires intentional growth. It requires allowing Jesus Christ to become the foundation upon which every decision, relationship, belief, and dream is built. God is not merely interested in removing chains; He is interested in establishing strength.
Finally, this journey leads to learning how to walk in freedom daily. Freedom is not something you visit occasionally. It becomes a lifestyle. It becomes the lens through which you see yourself, your future, and your relationship with God. Every day presents different opportunities to choose faith over fear, healing over hiding, truth over deception, and purpose over limitation.
Throughout these five days, you will be invited to recognize your chains, leave behind what is familiar, renew your mind with truth, establish new foundations, and confidently walk in the liberty Christ has already purchased for you. Marronnage is more than the art of escaping bondage. It is the art of becoming the person God always intended you to be.
The prison door is open. The chains are broken. The invitation has been extended. Now it is time to walk free!
Let’s Begin Day 1:
Good Morning Sunshine! You Need To Recognize The Chains!
Galatians 5:1 (KJV) ~ “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians to address believers who had experienced the freedom found in Jesus Christ but were slowly being persuaded to return to systems of bondage. False teachers had entered the church and convinced many that salvation and acceptance with God required more than faith in Christ. Paul passionately reminded them that Jesus did not endure the cross to leave them partially free. He came to establish complete freedom. Paul understood that bondage is not always obvious. Sometimes people can be free in one area while remaining captive in another. His warning was clear, do not become entangled again. The word entangled paints the picture of becoming wrapped up, trapped, or restricted by something that limits movement and progress. Paul wanted believers to understand that freedom is not merely a gift to receive; it is a reality to protect. His words still echo today because many believers have been delivered by Christ while unknowingly carrying chains that continue to influence their lives.
Freedom often begins long before a chain falls off. It begins with revelation. Before God changes your circumstances, He changes your awareness. Before He removes the burden, He exposes it. Before He destroys the stronghold, He identifies it. You may have spent years carrying things that God never intended for you to bear. You may have adapted to certain struggles so completely that they feel normal. Fear may feel normal. Worry may feel normal. People-pleasing may feel normal. Self-doubt may feel normal. Yet normal does not necessarily mean healthy. The Holy Spirit has a way of lovingly revealing what has become familiar but was never meant to remain. Psalm 139:23-24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” This scripture is not the prayer of someone trying to hide. It is the prayer of someone ready to be free. When you invite God to search your heart, you are giving Him permission to reveal what He intends to heal.
One of the greatest challenges in your journey toward freedom is recognizing that not every chain is visible. Some chains cannot be seen with natural eyes because they are attached to your thinking. A chain may look like constantly expecting the worst outcome even when God has been faithful. A chain may appear as insecurity that causes you to question your value despite what Scripture says about you. A chain may be rooted in rejection, causing you to interpret every disappointment through the lens of abandonment. A chain may be shame that constantly reminds you of who you used to be rather than who Christ says you are becoming. The enemy works diligently to keep chains hidden because hidden chains are rarely challenged. Yet John 8:32 declares, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Notice that freedom is connected to truth. Every lie loses strength when exposed to God’s truth. Every stronghold weakens when confronted by God’s Word.
You may discover that some of your chains were formed during seasons when you were simply trying to survive. Perhaps life taught you to guard your heart so aggressively that vulnerability now feels dangerous. Maybe disappointment taught you to lower your expectations because hoping again seems risky. It could be that rejection taught you to seek validation from people instead of resting in God’s approval. Survival strategies often develop during difficult seasons, but what helped you survive one season may hinder you in the next. God understands why those patterns developed, but He also understands when they have outlived their purpose. Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing.” The Lord is not asking you to deny your history. He is inviting you to stop allowing your history to dictate your future. Freedom requires believing that God can write a different ending than what your past experiences predicted.
The children of Israel provide one of the clearest biblical pictures of this struggle. They cried out for deliverance, and God answered with mighty signs and wonders. He broke Pharaoh’s grip, parted the Red Sea, and led them into the wilderness. Yet despite witnessing God’s power, their thinking remained attached to Egypt. Whenever challenges arose, they remembered the familiarity of slavery more than the pain of bondage. They longed for what was known because the unknown felt uncomfortable. Numbers 14 reveals how quickly fear can distort perspective. They forgot the miracles and focused on the obstacles. Before judging them too harshly, you may need to consider how often you have done the same thing. Sometimes God begins opening new doors, but fear convinces you to stay where you are. Sometimes He calls you into greater freedom, but familiarity whispers that captivity is safer. Yet freedom will always require you to trust God beyond what feels comfortable.
One of the reasons chains remain in place is because they become intertwined with identity. You may have carried something so long that you no longer see it as a burden. Instead, you see it as part of who you are. You may say, “I’ve always been this way,” without realizing that God is inviting you into transformation. You may have accepted anxiety as your personality, insecurity as your identity, or fear as your companion. Yet Second Corinthians 5:17 declares that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. Old things are passed away and all things become new. God never intended for your wounds to become your identity. He never intended for your failures to define your future. He never intended for your struggles to become your name. His plan has always been redemption. His desire has always been restoration. His purpose has always been freedom.
The process of recognizing chains requires honesty, and honesty often feels uncomfortable before it becomes liberating. You cannot heal what you continually hide. You cannot confront what you constantly excuse. You cannot surrender what you refuse to acknowledge. Yet God is not asking you to expose your weaknesses so He can condemn you. Romans 8:1 reminds you that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. His goal is not to shame you. His goal is to free you. The Holy Spirit functions as both Comforter and Counselor. He reveals truth while simultaneously providing the grace to respond to it. When He points to an area that needs healing, He never does so from a place of rejection. He does so from a place of love. Every revelation becomes an invitation to greater freedom.
You may be surprised by what God reveals when you slow down long enough to listen. He will uncover fears that have quietly influenced major decisions. He will expose limiting beliefs that have prevented you from pursuing opportunities. He will reveal wounds that continue to affect relationships. He will identify patterns that have become barriers to growth. None of this happens because God is disappointed in you. It happens because He sees who you can become without those chains. Hebrews 12:1 encourages believers to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets them. Notice that Scripture distinguishes between weights and sins. Some things may not be sinful, but they are still heavy. Some attitudes, fears, and habits may not be overtly wrong, but they still restrict movement. God desires to remove both.
The journey of marronnage begins with awareness because awareness creates opportunity. Once a chain is identified, it can be challenged. Once a lie is exposed, it can be replaced. Once a wound is acknowledged, it can be healed. Once a burden is surrendered, it can be lifted. God is not intimidated by your struggles. He is not overwhelmed by your wounds. He is not discouraged by your process. Philippians 1:6 declares that He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. That means the God who reveals the chain is also the God who possesses the key. The God who exposes the wound is also the God who heals it. The God who identifies the stronghold is also the God who tears it down. You are not facing this journey alone. The One who called you into freedom walks beside you every step of the way.
Today, God is inviting you to stop managing chains and start confronting them. He is asking you to exchange excuses for honesty and fear for faith. He is encouraging you to believe that freedom is possible even in areas that have felt unchanged for years. Galatians 5:1 is not merely a suggestion; it is an invitation. Christ has already provided freedom. Your responsibility is to stand in it. Refuse to become entangled again. Refuse to accept what God has called you to overcome. Refuse to allow your past to define your future. Refuse to settle for survival when God is offering transformation. The first step in the art of freeing yourself is recognizing the chain. Once you see it clearly, you can place it in the hands of the One who specializes in breaking every chain and setting captives free.
Let’s Pray:
Father, I come before You today with an open heart, a willing spirit, and a sincere desire to experience the freedom You have prepared for me. Thank You for loving me enough to pursue every hidden place within my life. Thank You for seeing beyond my outward appearance and looking directly into my heart. Thank You for knowing every burden I carry, every fear I hide, every wound I conceal, and every struggle I face. Nothing about me is hidden from You, yet Your love remains constant and unwavering. Your grace continues to meet me in every place of weakness. Your mercy continues to cover me. Your faithfulness continues to sustain me. Today I invite You to search me and reveal anything that stands between me and the freedom You desire for me. Lord, I ask You to uncover every chain that has quietly influenced my life. Reveal the thoughts that do not align with Your truth. Expose the fears that have limited my faith. Show me the areas where insecurity has spoken louder than Your promises. Reveal every lie that I have unknowingly believed about myself. Help me recognize the difference between who I am and what I have experienced. Give me eyes to see myself through the lens of redemption rather than the lens of my past. Help me embrace Your perspective above my own. Father, forgive me for the times I have accepted limitations that You never assigned to me. Forgive me for agreeing with fear instead of faith. Forgive me for allowing disappointment to shape my expectations. Forgive me for carrying burdens You never intended for me to bear. Forgive me for trying to manage chains instead of surrendering them. Teach me how to trust You more deeply. Teach me how to release what I have been holding onto. Teach me how to walk in the liberty You have already provided through Christ. Lord Jesus, thank You for the sacrifice You made on my behalf. Thank You that every drop of blood You shed carried the power to break chains, destroy strongholds, and set captives free. Thank You that my freedom was purchased long before I understood I needed it. Thank You that I do not have to earn what You have already provided. Help me receive Your freedom completely. Help me believe that what You accomplished on the cross is greater than anything I have faced. Let the reality of Your victory become greater than the memory of my struggles. Holy Spirit, shine Your light into every hidden place within me. Reveal wounds that still need healing and thoughts that still need renewal. Guide me gently through this process of transformation. Help me welcome Your correction without fear. Help me receive Your truth without resistance. Help me trust that every area You expose is an area You intend to heal. Let Your presence become my comfort, Your Word become my foundation, and Your truth become my guide. Father, replace every lie with truth, every fear with faith, every burden with peace, and every insecurity with confidence in You. Let Your Word take root in my heart and transform the way I think. Help me stand firmly upon Your promises when circumstances attempt to shake me. Remind me daily that I am chosen, loved, redeemed, accepted, and called according to Your purpose. Strengthen me to reject every voice that contradicts what You have spoken over my life. Today, I surrender every chain, every wound, every fear, every regret, and every burden into Your hands. I choose honesty over hiding, freedom over bondage, and faith over fear. I declare that what You reveal, You will heal. I declare that what You expose, You will restore. I declare that what You identify, You will transform. Thank You for beginning this work within me and for faithfully bringing it to completion. I trust You with my healing, my growth, and my freedom. In Jesus Christ Mighty Name, Amen.
Nugget ~ The chain cannot be broken until it is recognized. The moment you allow God to reveal what has been hiding in plain sight, you position yourself for the freedom He has always intended for you to walk in!
Blessings…
Love, Dr. Jean…
