Good Morning Sunshine! Keep Digging Before You See It!

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) ~ “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Yesterday, the Lord placed a shovel into your hands. He reminded you that every assignment begins with someone willing to break the ground. You discovered that the shovel represents your faith, your obedience, your perseverance, and your willingness to continue working even when nothing around you appears to be changing. Today, God invites you one step deeper into the process because there is a lesson every builder, every farmer, every miner, and every believer must eventually learn: you must dig before you see it.

One of the greatest challenges of following God is that He rarely allows you to see the finished picture before asking for your obedience. If He showed you every detail from the beginning, faith would no longer be necessary. Instead, He reveals enough to invite your trust while withholding enough to develop your dependence upon Him. That can be uncomfortable because your natural mind prefers certainty before commitment. You want to know how everything will work, when it will happen, who will help you, how much it will cost, and what the outcome will be. Yet God often smiles and simply says, “Pick up your shovel.” He knows that every scoop of faith uncovers another layer of His faithfulness.

Hebrews chapter eleven has often been called the Hall of Faith, but it is much more than a list of spiritual heroes. It is a testimony that ordinary men and women accomplished extraordinary things because they trusted God before they saw the results. The chapter opens by defining faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Notice that faith possesses evidence before visible proof appears. Faith is not pretending something exists; it is confidently trusting the One who has already spoken. Noah built an ark before there was rain. Abraham left his homeland before he knew his destination. Sarah believed for a child while her body declared the promise impossible. Moses stretched out his staff before the sea divided. Joshua marched around walls before they fell. Every one of them dug before they saw it.

That is how the Kingdom of God operates. God often asks you to prepare for what you cannot yet see. He tells you to forgive before relationships are restored. He calls you to give before finances increase. He invites you to serve before recognition comes. He asks you to write before readers appear. He tells you to study before opportunities open. He leads you to pray before circumstances change. The shovel always moves before the harvest appears because obedience prepares the ground where miracles grow.

Think about a farmer standing in an empty field. To the casual observer, it looks like wasted effort. He plows dirt that has produced nothing. He plants seeds that immediately disappear beneath the soil. He waters ground that still appears empty. For weeks there is little visible evidence that anything is happening. Yet the farmer is not discouraged because he understands something others may not: just because you cannot see growth does not mean growth has stopped. Beneath the surface, seeds are splitting open, roots are reaching downward, and life is quietly forming where no human eye can observe it. The field looks unchanged above the ground while everything is changing below it.

Your spiritual life often resembles that field. Perhaps you have been praying for your family, but nothing appears different. Perhaps you have been believing God for healing, restoration, direction, or provision, yet your circumstances still look the same. Perhaps you have remained faithful to your calling while wondering if anyone notices your labor. The temptation during these seasons is to conclude that nothing is happening. Yet heaven measures progress differently than earth. God is often accomplishing His greatest work beneath the surface before you ever see visible fruit.

There is an old story about Chinese bamboo that beautifully illustrates this truth. After the seed is planted, it must be watered and cared for consistently. During the first year, nothing appears above the ground. The second year passes, and still nothing is visible. The third year comes with no visible growth. Even into the fourth year, the gardener continues watering what appears to be empty soil. Many people would assume the seed had died. Yet beneath the surface, an extraordinary root system is developing. Then sometime during the fifth year, the bamboo suddenly grows as much as eighty to ninety feet in only a few weeks. The question has often been asked; did the bamboo grow in a few weeks, or did it grow over five years? The answer is obvious. Had it not developed deep roots first, it would never have survived its rapid growth later.

God often develops your roots before He reveals your fruit. The waiting is not punishment. The hidden season is not failure. The silence is not abandonment. It is preparation. Galatians 6:9 speaks directly to those hidden seasons: “Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Paul understood something every believer must learn. Weariness is not always physical. Sometimes you become emotionally weary. Sometimes you become spiritually tired. Sometimes you grow weary from believing, hoping, serving, forgiving, praying, and waiting. The danger of weariness is not simply exhaustion, it is that weariness whispers, “Quit now.” Yet notice God’s promise. He never says there will not be a harvest. He says there will be a harvest if you do not lose heart. The condition is perseverance.

One of the enemy’s favorite strategies is convincing you to stop digging just before breakthrough. He understands that many believers are closer than they realize. He whispers that your prayers have accomplished nothing, that your obedience has gone unnoticed, and that your efforts are wasted. But the enemy cannot see what God is doing beneath the surface either. While he celebrates your discouragement, heaven is strengthening your roots. While he tries to convince you to quit, God is preparing your next season. Do not confuse delayed visibility with delayed victory.

Imagine a miner searching for gold. He spends weeks breaking through solid rock with little to show for his labor. Every strike appears identical to the one before it. Dust fills the air. Sweat covers his face. The work is repetitive, exhausting, and slow. Unknown to him, he may be only inches away from the richest vein of gold in the mountain. If he stops because he cannot yet see the treasure, he walks away from the very breakthrough he has been pursuing. How many blessings remain buried simply because someone quit digging too soon? How many prayers remain unanswered because someone stopped praying one day before God’s appointed time? How many books remain unwritten, ministries remain unopened, businesses remain unstarted, relationships remain unrestored, and dreams remain unrealized because discouragement convinced someone to lay their shovel down?

Today the Holy Spirit lovingly reminds you that faith does not wait until the evidence appears. Faith creates movement before the evidence arrives. Every time you choose obedience over convenience, you are digging. Every time you worship while you are waiting, you are digging. Every time you forgive despite the pain, you are digging. Every time you trust God without full understanding, you are digging. Every scoop of faith loosens another layer of resistance until one day what has been growing beneath the surface suddenly becomes visible to everyone around you.

Do not despise the hidden seasons of your life. Roots grow in secret. Character develops in quiet places. Trust is refined in waiting. Perseverance is strengthened in repetition. God is never wasting your hidden seasons because He is preparing you for visible fruit. When the harvest finally comes, you will realize that every prayer mattered, every act of obedience mattered, every tear mattered, every sacrifice mattered, and every scoop of dirt mattered.

So today, pick up your shovel once again. Dig before you see it. Believe before you understand it. Pray before it changes. Serve before you are recognized. Trust before the doors open. Because the God who called you to dig already knows where the treasure is buried.

Let’s Pray

Father, thank You for reminding me that faith often works beneath the surface before it is ever seen above the surface. Thank You that You never ask me to believe blindly but to trust the faithfulness of the One who has never broken a promise. Today I choose to place my confidence in Your character rather than in my circumstances. Even when I cannot see what You are doing, I believe You are faithfully working on my behalf. Father, forgive me for every time I have mistaken hidden seasons for forgotten seasons. Forgive me for allowing discouragement to cloud my vision and impatience to weaken my perseverance. Thank You that while I was questioning the process, You were strengthening my roots. Thank You that while I wondered if anything was happening, You were quietly preparing what only You could accomplish. Help me trust that Your unseen work is just as important as the miracles I long to see. Lord, strengthen my faith to keep digging before I see visible results. Help me continue praying when answers seem delayed. Help me continue serving when appreciation is absent. Help me continue giving when resources feel limited. Help me continue loving when relationships become difficult. Help me continue believing Your promises even when my emotions struggle to understand the process. Let my faith become anchored in Your Word instead of my circumstances. Holy Spirit, guard my heart against spiritual weariness. When I become tired, refresh me. When I become discouraged, encourage me. When I become impatient, remind me of Your perfect timing. When comparison attempts to distract me, redirect my eyes back to the assignment You have given me. Let me remain faithful in my own field, trusting that You alone determine the seasons of sowing and reaping. Father, develop deep roots within me. Build character before You build platforms. Build humility before You build influence. Build integrity before You build opportunities. Build dependence before You build success. I never want visible fruit without deep spiritual roots. Let my private walk with You become stronger than my public ministry for You. Teach me to treasure Your presence more than the promises I am pursuing. Lord Jesus, thank You for never abandoning the mission the Father entrusted to You. You faithfully endured every step of the journey, even when it led to the Cross. Help me follow Your example with unwavering obedience. Let Your perseverance become my perseverance. Let Your faithfulness become my example. May I never lay down my shovel simply because the work has become difficult. Finally, Father, I declare today that I will not lose heart. I will continue digging. I will continue believing. I will continue praying. I will continue serving. I will continue trusting because I know that You are faithful to complete everything You have begun. I believe that beneath the surface You are preparing something greater than I can presently imagine, and I choose to remain steadfast until the harvest You have promised appears in Your perfect time.
