Galatians 5:1 (KJV) ~ “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
We started this series off with Galatians 5 and we will end with it. The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Galatians to believers who had experienced the liberating power of Jesus Christ. They had been delivered from religious bondage and introduced to the grace of God, yet many were being tempted to return to old systems, old practices, and old forms of captivity. Paul’s concern was not whether Christ had truly set them free. His concern was whether they would remain in that freedom. He understood that freedom is not only something you receive; it is something you must intentionally walk in. The phrase “Stand Fast” means to remain firm, remain steadfast, and refuse to be moved. Paul knew that freedom would be tested, challenged, and opposed. He also knew that believers possessed everything necessary through Christ to remain free. His message was clear: once God has delivered you, do not willingly return to what He brought you out of.
As you come to the end of this journey of marronnage, you begin to realize that freedom is not simply about escaping bondage. Freedom is about establishing a lifestyle that refuses to return to captivity. During this devotional series, you learned that freedom begins by recognizing the chains. You cannot confront what you refuse to acknowledge. You cannot surrender what you continue to hide. Day One taught you that God lovingly reveals hidden places because He desires to heal them. Every chain that was exposed became an opportunity for freedom. Every lie that was uncovered became an opportunity for truth. Every wound that was identified became an opportunity for restoration. Recognition was the beginning of your journey.
Day Two taught you that recognizing chains is not enough. Once God reveals bondage, He often calls you to leave what has become familiar. The challenge of freedom is that familiar places can feel safer than unknown possibilities. Many people remain connected to unhealthy patterns, relationships, mindsets, and behaviors simply because they know them well. Yet God continually invites His children beyond what is comfortable and into what is transformational. Abraham left familiar surroundings because he trusted God’s promise. The children of Israel left Egypt because God was leading them toward a promise greater than their past. Freedom requires movement. It requires faith. It requires believing that what God has ahead is greater than what He is asking you to leave behind.
Day Three taught you that after leaving bondage, God begins teaching you how to live differently. Deliverance may happen in a moment, but transformation often happens over time. The children of Israel physically left Egypt quickly, but Egypt had to be removed from their thinking. God began teaching them how to think as free people rather than slaves. The same process occurs within your life. God replaces fear with faith. He replaces insecurity with identity. He replaces shame with grace. He replaces lies with truth. Freedom becomes stronger every time you choose God’s Word over your old thought patterns. The more truth takes root within your heart, the more difficult it becomes for bondage to regain its former influence.
Day Four taught you that freedom requires strong foundations. Chains may be broken, but lasting freedom requires stability. God is not merely interested in removing what is unhealthy. He is interested in building what is healthy. He establishes truth where deception once lived. He establishes confidence where insecurity once ruled. He establishes faith where fear once dominated. Christ becomes the foundation upon which your new life is built. Every prayer, every scripture, every act of obedience, and every moment of trust strengthens that foundation. The stronger the foundation, the stronger your ability to remain free when life becomes difficult.
Now, Day Five brings everything together. You have recognized the chain. You have left what was familiar. You have begun renewing your mind. You have allowed God to establish stronger foundations. The question now becomes: what do you do after you have gotten free? The answer is simple but powerful. You remain free. Freedom is not something you visit occasionally. Freedom becomes a way of life. Freedom becomes the atmosphere in which you live. Freedom becomes the lens through which you see yourself, your future, and your relationship with God. Remaining free requires intentionality. It requires vigilance. It requires continued dependence upon God.
One of the greatest dangers after freedom is forgetting what bondage cost you. The children of Israel repeatedly struggled because they remembered Egypt through the lens of familiarity rather than reality. They remembered meals but forgot chains. They remembered routines but forgot oppression. They remembered comfort but forgot captivity. The enemy often attempts to convince you that what God delivered you from was not as bad as it actually was. He will tempt you to romanticize old seasons. He will tempt you to revisit old patterns. He will tempt you to reopen doors that God closed. Yet wisdom remembers both the pain and the purpose of deliverance. Wisdom remembers why freedom was necessary.
You may discover that old thoughts occasionally attempt to revisit your mind. Old fears may occasionally knock on the door. Old temptations may occasionally try to reclaim territory. Yet their appearance does not mean they possess authority. Just because a thought arrives does not mean it deserves residence. Just because fear speaks does not mean it deserves agreement. Second Corinthians 10:5 reminds you to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Freedom is often protected through daily decisions. Every time you choose truth over deception, you strengthen your freedom. Every time you choose faith over fear, you reinforce your freedom. Every time you choose obedience over compromise, you preserve your freedom.
Remaining free requires maintaining your connection with God. Prayer is not merely a spiritual discipline. Prayer is a lifeline. Worship is not merely a song. Worship is a posture of surrender. Scripture is not merely information. Scripture is nourishment for your soul. Community is not merely fellowship. Community is accountability and encouragement. These practices help you remain grounded when life becomes difficult. They strengthen your relationship with the One who set you free. The closer you remain to God, the stronger your freedom becomes. The more rooted you become in His presence, the less appealing bondage appears.
One of the beautiful truths about freedom is that it creates room for purpose. God did not set you free simply so you could avoid bondage. He set you free so you could fulfill your assignment. Galatians 5:13 reminds believers that they were called unto liberty. Freedom is not the destination. Freedom creates the capacity to pursue the destination. You are free to love differently. Free to serve differently. Free to worship differently. Free to grow differently. Free to become everything God created you to be. Bondage limits purpose. Freedom releases it. This is why remaining free matters so much.
You may also discover that your freedom becomes a testimony for someone else. People who are still fighting battles you have overcome will look at your life and find hope. Those who are still trapped in fear may discover courage through your story. Those who are still struggling with shame may discover healing through your testimony. Revelation 12:11 declares that believers overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. Your freedom is not only for you. It becomes evidence of God’s faithfulness to others. Every chain broken in your life becomes proof that God still delivers.
As you conclude this journey of marronnage, remember that freedom is not fragile when it is rooted in Christ. The same God who revealed the chain is the God who broke it. The same God who called you out is the God who sustains you. The same God who taught you how to live free is the God who empowers you to remain free. You do not have to fear every challenge or worry about every temptation. Your confidence is not in your strength. Your confidence is in God’s faithfulness. He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
Today, make a decision, and refuse to return to what God has delivered you from. Refuse to agree with lies you have already overcome. Refuse to reopen doors that God has closed. Refuse to settle for survival when God has called you to freedom. Stand firm in the liberty Christ has provided. Walk boldly in the identity He has given. Continue building upon the foundation He established. Continue renewing your mind through His truth. Continue leaving behind what no longer serves His purpose. Once you have gotten free, remain free. Freedom is not just your testimony. Freedom is your lifestyle.
Let’s Pray:
Father, I thank You for every step of this journey. Thank You for revealing the chains that once held me captive. Thank You for giving me the courage to leave what was familiar. Thank You for renewing my mind with Your truth and establishing stronger foundations beneath my life. Thank You for every lesson, every breakthrough, every healing, and every moment of growth. Your faithfulness has carried me farther than I could have traveled on my own. Lord, I acknowledge that freedom is a gift that comes from You. I could not earn it, manufacture it, or create it through my own efforts. You are the One who delivered me. You are the One who healed me. You are the One who restored me. Help me remain humble and continually dependent upon Your grace. Let me never forget the source of my freedom. Father strengthen me when old thoughts attempt to return. Remind me of Your truth when fear tries to speak. Help me recognize the difference between temptation and agreement. Give me wisdom to reject every lie and courage to stand firmly upon Your promises. Let Your Word become my first response in every situation. Lord Jesus, help me guard the freedom You have given me. Teach me to remain watchful and discerning. Show me when old patterns attempt to reappear. Reveal anything that seeks to draw me away from Your will. Help me maintain healthy boundaries, strong convictions, and a heart fully surrendered to You. Holy Spirit, keep renewing my mind daily. Continue teaching me how to think, respond, and live as a free person. Let Your voice remain louder than every competing influence. Guide my decisions, direct my steps, and help me remain sensitive to Your leading. Let freedom continue growing in every area of my life. Father, thank You for the purpose connected to my freedom. Thank You that You did not deliver me merely to escape bondage but to fulfill the calling You have placed upon my life. Use my testimony to encourage others. Let my life reflect Your goodness and demonstrate Your power. Allow my freedom to become a witness of Your faithfulness. Today, I declare that I will remain free. I will stand firm in the liberty Christ has provided. I will continue renewing my mind, strengthening my foundation, and walking in obedience. I surrender my future into Your hands and trust You with every step ahead. Thank You for bringing me out, bringing me through, and bringing me forward. In Jesus Christ Mighty and Matchless Name, Amen.
Nugget ~ Freedom is not a moment; it is a lifestyle. Once God has brought you out, do not return to what He delivered you from. Stand firm, walk boldly, and remain free!
